-1, and +1 for the originally proposed version. For someone wanting to just check out 
something  that works, the "dev"/"stable"/"release" naming gives a fairly decent idea 
of what to expect. "master" has completely different meaning in different projects, 
there's no way to know what it might contain without consulting "external" documentation.
Also, since "master" has been used in the past, re-using it for a different(!) level will
cause confusion, as people will run into outdated information all over the net.
