Yes, please; that's what Python does and it seems to work well. (You 
could even add a cookie to always take the user to the last version they 
looked at, regardless of what link they followed.)

Isn't Google supposedly ranked by frequency of external links? This 
would suggest that more people are linking to (and probably using) 4.8 
than 5.x, which is not exactly surprising.
