From the commit message that I've linked to:

commit 008926f193ceb29da6ca94fae6a7efb3ca0e0f09
Author: Friedemann Kleint <Friedemann.Kleint at theqtcompany.com>
Date: Fri Nov 28 10:18:38 2014 +0100

Assistant: Introduce DEFINES per browser type.
This makes it easier to add additional browser types and
    switch between browsers.

So no, the intention seems to make it more suitable for Qt WebEngine.
