Ach, I was carelessly looking at the first hit for 
"direct-externa-access" in the docs, which was the LoongArch-specific

The x86-specific 
<https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-15.2.0/gcc/x86-Options.html#index-mno-direct-extern-access> 
indeed says "The default is -mdirect-extern-access."
