There are two modules inside the QtLocation git repo. There is the QtPositioning module and there is the QtLocation module. The former Mobility QtLocation API was split.
The QtPositioning API (http://doc-snapshot.qt-project.org/qt5-stable/qtpositioning-index.html) can be used and the API commitment will be given once 5.2 is out. There is no API commitment or even release of QtLocation (src/location).
When you refer to MapViewer I assume you referring to the Mapping QML classes. Those API's are not released and not part of 5.2. Please distinguish the two Modules and the fact that they happen to be in the same git repo.

QtPositioning does not have Qt3d dependencies. It merely deals with Positioning information. QtLocation does have Qt3d dependencies. One of the things we consider doing is to remove the Qt3d before we even considering a first release of QtLocation.
