Giving that a second thought I am not so sure anymore whether that works "out of the box" (without further ado) with Qt. I'd expect it so for sure.

Off course in order that drag and drop works "across processes" there is support from the underlying OS required: the data needs to be copied into a system buffer (the "clipboard" I remember) and the OS needs to inform the other process that the mouse is hovering over its window (with pressed mouse button state and that there is data to be accepted etc.).

I cannot imagine that you need to explicitly tell Qt to "initiate the drag and drop over system/OS functionality (else over some Qt internal buffer which is only accessible by the current process)". I would not know about such API...

But just to rule out the usual suspects: does drag and drop "in general" work with your current Window Manager" (in applications where you /know/ that certain MIME types are accepted)? E.g. when you drag and drop a file from your File Manager to your Email editor: does it get "attached" (or even embedded) (in)to your current email that you are typing?

Cheers,
  Oliver
