I don't know exactly why this is happening, but I would do something 
entirely different:

Subclass QWidget for the Editor object.
Add "editor->setAttribute(Qt::WA_TranslucentBackground);"
Paint the arrow and the rest of the background in the QWidget object.

Other than the fact that I usually do this - so I know it works :) - you 
also have antialiased borders on the transparency.
