They've done that and they're doing it further, for more types of devices. I
know that the recent Smart TVs are running Linux -- there are even some
exploits known for them. They announced cameras running Linux last November.
As far as I can tell, the only reasons you wouldn't run Linux are if your
device has less than 4 MB of RAM or if your letterhead says "Microsoft" or
"Apple".
To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if that Smart TV giving you problems
turned out to be running Linux too. The entire industry was switching to Linux
back in 2010 already.
