I'd think that the simplest solution might be to create an English 
translation (you might want to have one anyway to handle singulars and 
plurals). Then, while you need that translation, you install it. As 
always the last installed translation is used first, this will override 
any other installed translation. When you no longer need it, you remove 
it again, and you're back to using the previously installed translation.
