They've been around since the PowerPC days. They were quite popular during the 
last processor transition exactly because of that, then later when the 64-bit 
platforms came online. Also used on iOS when the iPhones started switching 
from 32- to 64-bit.

There was a time when some binaries came with four slices (ppc32, ppc64, i386, 
x86_64). As far as I know, no one has ever done five (adding x86_64h to those 
four).
