Hi all,

I have just started translating MueScore, and it looks like some of the
button labels (like OK, Cancel, Apply etc.) might be provided directly
by the QT toolkit. So, if my assumption is correct, I'd like so start a
new translation project to get these out-of-the box UI elements localized.

We do not have the (wo)manpower at this time to do a full translation of
QT Linguist or QTCreator etc. though.

Language code: gd
Native name: Gàidhlig
English name: Scottish Gaelic

Where do I start? I'm an experienced localizer, so all I need is a
pointer to the file(s) to translate.

Hi!

You are right, these must be localized in upstream Qt.
And that's where the good news end, localizing Qt is a massive PITA.

You must checkout the Qt sources from their git repository, create a Qt
account, upload SSH keys, make the translation in the target branch, then
push it to their gerrit server.

If you manage to do this, please tell us how did you do it, because I
couldn't. We did the whole translation thing for Qt 5.6, but I did not
manage to push it in two months.

Sorry for the rant, but I think that this is ridiculous for such a large
software project.

I agree with you. It should at least be possible to attach the
translation files to a bug so a developer/translations coordinator can
commit them. git is not for the uninitiated.

I'll be back at my Linux box next week and will have a look at the
signup process then, maybe I can commit your translations for you.

I started looking into submittiong translations, and the instructions
say "In case you really cannot find your way through git/Gerrit and
cannot find someone to help you, you may contribute via email after
accepting the CLA on Gerrit."

There are no instructions on how to accept the CLA without configuring
an ssh key though. The ssh instructions are for Linux only - if you're
on Windows, you could run a Linux virtual machine on VMWare for that.
It's a bit overkill though just for adding a translation - things would
be so much easier if we had a Pootle server or something like that.

Hi all,

I have finished my translation of qtbase 5.6 and now would like to do
the same for version 5.8, without having to click through a bazillion
entries. So, I'm looking for the Qt equivalent for msgmerge, which seems
to be lconvert.

I have downloaded the 5.8 release from the Qt homepage and installed it
on Linux Mint. No lconvert. Then I searched the software manager for
lconvert, which came up with an already installed Libv4lconvert0, which
is a video thing. No other search results. I also tried sudo apt-get
install lconvert, no joy.

Any pointers?

The Qt equivalent is lupdate not lconvert

the easiest way is to have the translation integrated into the lower
branch, and then just wait a few days for it being forward-merged. when
that happens, you update the template in the higher branch (or get the
one from the website) and continue from there. there should be no
clicking required where nothing changed.

it's *really* not recommended to work on two versions simultaneously. it
would be a nightmare to review, and to process the feedback.

So let's start keeping the translatable strings as it is & fix remaining important issues. And let's have the official String Freeze 28th April 2017.

Because clicking through the signup process led me to the bit with the
SH key before leading me to the CLA. I interrupted the process there
because I need to get to my Linux box for the SHH key thing.

I am struggling a bit with finding information on the homepage, as you
might have guessed. For example, the only reason I figured out how to
get QLinguist for Windows was a forum post by somebody having the same
question. Trying to search the web for information on where to get
lconvert or lupdate is a waste of time, so I had to resort to asking. If
it is documented on the QT homepage, it's not any place that it's easy
to find for the uninitiated.

btw, the "unless approved by the documentation team" is to be understood
as "the old text is so bad that we cannot possibly release it like
that". that means that the docu team is supposed to act as an actual
gatekeeper, not to rubber-stamp random gratuitous changes.

How long does the forward-merge usually take? It's been a week since my
translation is merged, and version 5.6 is showing up in the site nicely.
I would like to start working on 5.8 now, but the file isn't there yet.

I did some more RTFM and tried running lupdate in all the configurations
that I could possibly think of, but all I it finds is 0 translations, so
I can't do it myself.
