That might be because the release underwent some kind of testing
before it was released, and the snapshots are, well..., snapshots ;-)
In the snapshots you'll see exactly what the nightly builds produced
from whatever was in the repository at the end of the day, no more,
no less. There is no testing involved, neither whether the code
compiles on all supported platforms, nor whether it works, nor
whether the produced installers work.
A snapshot is not an "improved prerelease". Using it instead of the
alpha release makes only sense if the alpha is unusable for some
reason and there is some indication that a snapshot might have a
fix for that problem. That can, of course, still means that unrelated
things might be broken in the snapshot.
Of course we are glad if problems with snapshots are reported, that's
basically the reason we have them ;-)
