Hmm, I'm not seeing this problem. I can also press Alt+Shift+Cursor keys 
to start a block selection.

What doesn't work is having Alt pressed when selecting things with the 
mouse, because my window manager uses Alt to move the window around. In 
that case a solution is to first click and then press Alt.
