It certainly has annoyed a few others as well already. I've tried some 
other approaches but none made me particularly happy yet.

Indeed applying a background color somewhere in between the line number 
background and the editor background would probably work fine, but the 
gray gets so subtle that it starts to depend on the monitor 
contrast/brightness whether you'd actually notice it. Of course the 
color would also need to be part of the color scheme settings.
