SUBDIRS is just a diferent project type
Each subdir become a project, so they cant be linked together :s
What you can do is make each subdir create a static lib and on the
project that contains the application link the static libs
I use this tecnology on one of my projects, but its not good, you loose
time linking libraries that are not need
QtCreator itself use this tecnique itself but it uses dll plugins,
infact the QtCreator.exe is just a couple of lines
But for my program i want a single application without a bunch of plugins :p

So that's why it is there at all ;-). But as long as you have a rough idea about a file name, method name, or class name, using "Locator" (or "Follow Symbol") is usually better suited IMO.
