And doing that you can even get the most out of parallel compilation, because if you define the dependencies in the build system, the build system will be able to figure out what parts can actually be done in parallel.
Have a look at Qt Creator's src/plugins/plugins.pro .

As a side note: "SUBDIRS" is a bit misleading, because you actually can specify any pro files as well:
SUBDIRS = part1.pro part2.pro relativepath/part3.pro
