[Qt-creator] Theory of Operation question concerning configurations

Nope, this is purely qmake question, Qt Creator has nothing to do with it.

I don't know "clean" way to do this with qmake (similar to debug_and_release CONFIG), 
but Coda Highland's suggestion is reasonable.
