Uhm, I can answer the last part of my question myself: Since with the static methods you don't get any instance of a QFileDialog you cannot connect to any signal either, hence you "loose control" of what is happening within the native dialog - stupid me ;)

And that actually answers the rest of my question as well, sorry for the noise (the influence of my coffee is diminishing quickly ;)
