[Qt-interest] LGPL and static linking

Hi Tiago,

You replied to the last message of a rather long mailing list thread on
this subject (I don't know if you followed it or just stepped in now).

There has been no clear answer on the subject except to say that nobody
seems to know for sure and there are a lot of opinions on the matter.

Nokia recommends to link dynamically, mostly just to be safe, as they
can't guarantee how judges across the world will view the license.

The question was passed along to the Free Software Foundation by someone
on the mailing list as well, but there's been no follow up as far as I'm
aware.

Be sure to read Nokia's reply on the mailing list though:
http://lists.trolltech.com/pipermail/qt-interest/2009-December/016090.html
There's also been a blog post on this:
http://blog.qt.nokia.com/2009/11/30/qt-making-the-right-licensing-decision/

While you're at it, read up on the rest of the mailing list thread (go
back to November for the start of it) if you have not already done
so.

Personally, I think the LGPL allows static linking as long as you are
willing to provide the means to compile your application with a modified
version of the LGPL licensed code, but IANAL.

Kind regards,

Jeroen
