Well, what about http://doc.trolltech.com/4.6/qdesktopwidget.html#screen and pass this as parent to your dialog / mainwindow widget, as I initially suggested? Doesn't that work?
You can also find out about the desktop geometry with http://doc.trolltech.com/4.6/qdesktopwidget.html#screenGeometry and place your widget accordingly.
