Where did you find that? showMaximized() works just fine on at least linux
(have no mac available) and the docs certainly don't say anything about
the method being platform specific. 

Of course the Windowmanager itself might simply ignore the request of the
widget/window to be maximized, but thats something that Qt simply can't do
anything about, you'll have to talk to the developers of the windowmanager.
