I think that your confusion may stem from the fact that I am not the one who originally posted on this subject, therefore I have no original question. My point was that I interpreted the original question (written by neither me nor you) in a broader sense, with regard to whether QSyntaxHighlighter, with its limited state (i.e. only an integer if you need to get state from a previous block) was suitable.  Based on the original question and my experience with QSyntaxHighlighter, I would say "no" (although, sadly, it would be "yes" with a trivial API change).
