Are you sure? I've built both Qt3 and Qt4 in paths with spaces here
(C:\Documents And Settings\<compiler>\<qtversion>)

Or maybe it worked because qmake wasn't run with an absolute path...

Or use a buildsystem that doesn't limit you :)
