Not taht I've tested this yet, but shouldn't it be called 
QTabWidget::pane:left / QTabWidget::pane:top instead?
(note the double-colon's position)

Cross-checked the docs, and if I understand them correctly, it should be 
QTabBar:left / QTabBar:top...
