Probably you are not streaming with the correct codecs (you should use
    MMSH/ASF/DIV3/MP3 to be sure that WMP reads it on all machines.

Besides, the correct list for this question is streaming at videolan.org.
The fact that the VLC interface is in Qt on Windows and Unix is
irrelevant to this list.
