I'm sorry, but that's just absurd. Qt-4.x should not take 4.6 GiB,
even with debug.

I remember reading something on this list about some pathetic
MSVC-specific "optimisation" that creates *massive* object files so
the resultant binary can be ever so slightly faster. Perhaps this is
what is happening here.

(Yes I'm biased; perhaps someone can convince me that this
optimisation really does bring a > 10% speed increase...)

If this is the case, to move forward, perhaps people that do use MSVC
could suggest ways to disable this special optimisation.

Any takers?
