I don't know how much the 4.5 docs improved compared to 4.3, but there
are quite a bit of things about qmake that were undocumented in earlier releases.

In general however Qt api docs are rather complete and really well
written.

Depends on your definition of "long", the first Qt licenses where sold
around 1995 IIRC, that makes it 14 years. Which at least to me is quite
a bit of time :)
