Sorry, I just got "my first iMac" last monday and am still struggling how to display hidden files in the "Finder" etc. (well, I found the solution with Google already - talking about "Mac and usability", ha! ;)
I have absolutely NO experience with developping on a Mac, left alone its APIs. But you might find help here:

(I did not read the responses there, but it looks like that this is what you need).
