If you think the criticism of MS is baseless I would encourage you to read up about what happened with Microsoft Java, the Windows 2000 implementation of TCP/IP (that code was BSD licensed, so there is nothing wrong with proprietary forking) or more recently the OOXML document fiasco... Then there is how they helped advance the general state of consumer computing backwards for years by innovating against Netscape (as soon as Netscape died IE stagnated), innovating against BeOS, innovating against Stacker w/ DOS 6 DoubleSpace, to name a few that come to mind...
