Another possible approach is to refactor your manual layout code that you 
already have and turn it into a custom layout class. I've just been doing 
something similar to this to make a docker-type layout within QGraphicsView. 
In my case I am docking QGraphicsWidgets around the outside (or inside) of a 
chart - think legends. This appears fairly similar to what you are trying to 
do.

It's not as bad to do as you might think.
