You could always just support the actual Growl protocol since there are 
good OS X and Windows clients available already. There's the wrinkle of 
probably needing some Linux-specific code assuming KDE and Gnome have got 
their collective acts together on a standard notification protocol which, 
if so, most likely isn't Growl-compatible.

Either way this surely beats reinventing the wheel in Qt! There may of 
course be some external restriction which prevents using a system-wide 
mechanism in the OP's case, but I thought it was worth pointing out the 
elephant in the room just to be sure :-)
