It was to do with the path, but maybe not in the way you'd think. I'd
changed the order of directories in the path in an attempt to get
designer launching from creator and that was screwing things up. It was
certainly nothing to do with different versions of Qt. Thanks for the
suggestion though, Alan. I should've written to say it was solved.

Takes about forty minutes to do a complete reinstall of Linux, I'd spent
a hell of a lot longer trying to track the damn thing down, so that was
not such an outrageous idea even though I didn't carry it out in the
end. :~)
Still can't get designer to launch from creator or put custom widgets in
designer but that's another story of great frustration. Not been the
best twenty-four hours or so...
