I started out thinking the same thing... that I could just use existing 
icons.
This is fine until your selected icon family does not contain a 
particular icon
which you need.

Now I use inkscape to create all of my icons. It may take a few days to 
get rolling, but once
you build up a supply or reusable parts, many icons can be created in a 
matter of minutes.
