You don't need to modify metacity, I think. You just need to tell it to ignore 
xinerama. Then it will not know about two screens but just see one big screen.
Problem with that approach: All new dialogs will pop up in the middle of the 
screen, that is half on the left screen and half on the right screen...

But maybe there is also an option in metacity to allow windows to span 
multiple screens when running maximized.
