Well, the old report was closed due to age, with a request to open a new one 
if still needed.  Posting here is not the right place for feature requests 
either, they just get lost.  So open a new bug, pointing out you (and others) 
need a way for users to enter a null date as well as valid dates in the same 
widget, and suggest adding a flag to enable this behaviour when required.

Delaying this until 5.0 seems unnecessary, especially as no-one knows when 
that will be, but it's only likely to get done before then if there's enough 
demand (or someone contributes a patch), which is where a bug report can also 
help.
