Even though I knew that such an environment variable check existed ("plugins fail to load" is an ever re-occuring subject here ;) it would be cool to have a section in the Qt docs covering these "hacks" - maybe under section "Undocumented features"? ;)

Another thing which comes to my mind - at least on Windows - is that Qt keeps track of failed plugins in the registry and does not try to reload them, unless the "Qt build key" changes, which is usually rarely the case during development. So it is worth deleting those registry entries once in a while (on Unix it is probaly stored somewhere under ".qtconfig" (or similar)).
