As it turned out, I didn't have to do any of that.

I simply installed the xorg-fonts and it now displays correctly.  It 
seems that the X11 version of Qt requires that the fonts be installed 
locally as well as on the [remote] X11 display.

It would have been nice if qtconfig would print a "missing fonts" error 
message rather than just display empty boxes.
