well, as far as I know, it was intentionally disabled at least in
2.1.8x, because it messed up the Vi dot (.) command. Maybe the same was
done in the earlier versions as well? If it works without FakeVim
enabled, this probably is the case.

I enabled it manually in the source, although that's not really a
solution. :\
