Octave in batch mode needs to be run in  a terminal for the standard i/o to
work correctly.*
*Running in batch mode it closes down at the end of the job. But if you want
it to stay until you see the results then you can add a pause command, in
the script. Octave then waits for an enter before finishing the script. If
it is not run in a terminal then somehow it does not wait for the enter.*
