I find that more disturbing than if it had not been the problem. I hope 
you can find the time to enter a bug report for Qt here.

What you have done is to treat the sympton, not cure the problem. 
Applications should not fail just because you run them as root, unless 
there are differences in the environments that cause it (path etc) or 
that you don't give root apps permission for X.
