  Qt generally encourages the use of signals and slots
  even within the same class. This feels like an
  unnecessary divergence from that general plan.

  I suspect the real answer is that this just never
  "bubbled up" high enough on the wish-list priority
  list to be worth an implementer's time.

Because they are not for free, usually the client interested is the actual
subclass itself, and not too many people need it as a signal. At least,
that would be my guess, I am not a Troll.
