We recently merged a contribution for Windows camera support (in April), and in theory (although not tested yet) the camerabin support could be made to work on Linux desktop.  We're looking at camerabin2 support (cheese is porting to this).  It's mostly a matter of having the time for the different platforms.  Contributions are welcome :)

Also, releasing of desktop support has been a (mostly non-technical) problem since the move to QtMobility.  QtMultimediaKit is still compiled for desktops in the build farm, for example.  I think the next release of the SDK (or an update?) will finally also deliver the desktop builds.
