We pay 60% of importing duty over the product price AND shipping cost, 
plus state tax (usually about 18%) over the previous tax (yes, we pay 
taxes on taxes... it's insane!), and other fees for basically anything 
sent via courier.

OTOH, if your package was sent via mail instead of UPS and with the 
value (inc. shipping) declared as below US$ 50, you would not have to 
pay anything - it would be tax free!
