I'd wondered if a simple copy like you suggested would work.  I'll give that a try next.

Strangely enough, when I tried mounting my HD rootfs as Doug suggested, my clean compile environment started spitting out errors.  The last one was related to a hw clock interface not being defined (sorry, not on the computer with the error on it so can't be more specific).  This was after resetting the make files and rerunning config.

I'll let you know how the copy works.
