I have just asked for help to Konstantin and Rajiv – I simple can’t do this here and now. I have tried again with Mail Merge with full connection, VPN and everything, but somehow the emails won’t go out.

Not surprising. You can thank the SPAM lords for attempting to abuse even hotel connections - at a previous location, we even ran an SMTP server on a non-standard port to allow field personnel to be able to reliably do work from hotel rooms.
