The assumption is that they would use it despite it being private, and
I'd work with them to help them adapt to any changes made between 5.1
and 5.2.
As far as I'm aware, the only drawback to using private APIs is that
they can change at any time without notice. So if I'm specifically
helping some people with that (for a limited period), then they should
be able to use private APIs.
