run configure.bat. After that I ran mingw32-make where I got into the
trouble mentioned at the top of the thread.

Based on your suggestion above, I am now running it all within a msys shell
with cmd (which btw opens a subshell for me) and I am running configure
with args.


Then I exited from the subshell and am running make. Will keep you posted.
