All of the printing-related tickets still get auto-assigned to John.
There are lots of recently-opened ones:

The much more difficult question is who the new default assignee is. Was this anywhere mentioned?

Otherwise, it makes no difference whether John is the auto assignee or not.

If there is no maintainer then the default assignee should be “Unassigned”. Although that might not make any difference in practice of fixing those issue, it does make a difference in being honest about the situation.
