You put up an alert telling the user that the operation can't be completed due to insufficient memory, and then field the tech support call that results. During the call you explain to the customer that they need better hardware. Since our application is used by scientists, they usually understand that it's not really our fault when they run out of memory trying to analyze an image stack from their confocal microscope. And if they can afford a confocal microscope, they should have sprung for a 64-bit processor!
