Well, "common" depends a lot on the platform, e.g. Xcode (which is  
quite common on the Mac) doesn't use Tabs :)

Btw, if you really want a "on one glance" view of all your open  
documents, I can point you to the "Open Documents" view: You can split  
the "Projects" view in the left-hand sidebar, and then select the open  
documents view in the appearing second view.
